Sex and Gender

Today I learnt about sex and gender from an online class. What I learnt is the meaning of gender and sex.  ‘’ Sex’’ refers to the biological differences between males and females, such as the genitalia and genetic differences. It is primarily associated with physical and physiological features including chromosomes gene experience , hormone levels and function, and reproductive / sexual anatomy .Generally sex never change whenever we are. But some people are not satisfied with original sexes. So they change gene sex.                    

Gender refers to the socially constructed roles, behavior, expressions and identities of girls, women, boys, men, and gender diverse people. It influences how people perceive themselves and each other, how they act and interact, and the distribution of power and resources in society. Gender identity is not confined to a binary (girls/ women, boys/men) nor is it static; it exists along a continuum and can change over time.  

Gender discrimination

Gender discrimination is unequal or disadvantageous treatment of an individual or harassment is a form of illegal gender. Sexual harassment is a form of illegal gender discrimination. Gender discrimination can be treating an individual differently based upon his/ him gender in academia or extracurricular activities, academic programs, discipline, class assignments given in a classroom, class enrollment, physical education, grading, and/ or athletics.

Sexism

Sexism is the prejudice or discrimination based on sex, especially in the form of discrimination against women. It can also mean the unfair treatment of people based on mean their sex or gender. Sexism is based on the idea that women are inferior to men, and functions to oppress women in society.

One of the ways in which sexism is manifested in countries and cultures around the world is through the socialization of gender norms. For example, gender roles have depicted women as the more hurting, emotional, and physically weaker gender. Thus, women have been relegated to the domestic sphere, while gender roles have depicted men as more fit for public life, leadership positions, activities in business, politics, and academia. Children can be socialized from an early age to believe that women and men have different and proper gender roles in society. An example of this process is the differences in toys marked to boys and girls. When people thinks of a baby as a boy , they give the baby toy vehivlrs, action figures or construction equipment , and when they consider the baby to be a girl , they give the baby barbiles dolls and they teach the girls “ walk like a girl” or “ sit like a girl” because they think that girls are physically weaker than boys .It is important to note that these gender roles are limiting for everyone-while girls are taught that they are physically weaker (“laugh like a girl) , and boys are taught that they are emotionally weaker ( boys don’t cry ).In many counties , pink is seen as a suitable color for a girl to wear, while boys are dressed in blue. These view of gender roles and the socialization that keeps them alieve, have led to discrimination against women in public life, as they are often  seen as inappropriately defying their assigned gender role . Essentially, the power structure at the basics of discrimination and violence against women is reinforced through the process of internalizing stereotypes and gender roles. This historical process, it should be stressed, does not exclude any region of the world ; however , in some regions it entails gender violence for women.
